French Hotel Barge Kir Royale – Barging in Champagne region of France
Learn about her storied journey from her birth in 1928 in Belgium as the freight barge Maria; her participation in World War Two carrying troups and supplies to the beaches of Normandy and sunk by a mine; and, after some rehabilitation, returning to life as a cargo carrier in Belgium.
She started a new career in 1976 as Wirramina, one of the pioneers of luxury European hotel barging in Belgium & Holland. Over the years, she’s changed hands and had various names, but she continued working as a luxury hotel barge. In 2024, with new owners and after an extensive refit, she successfully carried out her first barge cruise in the Champagne region of France under her present name, Kir Royale.
